Cufflinks have been with us in one form or another for hundreds, if not thousands of years. The cufflink as we know it today became prevalent in the middle of the 19th century when French cuff shirts featuring folded and starched cuffs were in vogue. The cuffs were far too stiff to allow the use of a button and so cufflinks were an essential feature of the wardrobes of the upper classes. The industrial revolution saw the mass production of more affordable pieces and usage spread to the middle classes and tradesmen.
The cufflinks were largely simple, unadorned pieces until the latter part of the century when the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, started sporting elaborate styles by Faberge. Decorative cufflinks then became fashionable accessories with the trend reaching its peak in the roaring 1920's when enamelled cufflinks in every conceivable shape and form were all the rage.
As the 20th century worn on and more sporty shirts with buttoned cuffs became fashionable for day wear, the use of cufflinks was confined to formal occasions and largely fell out of fashion. There was, however a resurgence of interest during the 1980's when there was a new fascination with older traditions. Cufflinks were back and when the French cuff shirt returned to fashion the 1990's cufflinks as adornments were the height of cool and have remained popular ever since.
Cufflinks are a fabulous way to add interest to an outfit and to exercise a little self-expression. Ornate, unusual and whimsical styles will always get you noticed and add a touch of flair and individuality to your look. Whilst some humorous cufflinks can look a little less than classy, whimsy does not have to come at the expense of style.
